As per 'new Zealand rules' (https://internetnz.nz/nz-domains/nz-rules/nz-rules-2024/ ) , any domain administered by a reseller should have the registrant contact be the actual owner/user of the domain. This means that If a reseller has a domain for a client, the reseller should not be the registrant.
nz rules interpretation of "Reseller"
Reseller means any person working in any way through or with a Registrar’s systems in registering or managing .nz domain names on behalf of a Domain Name Holder
This is the relevant clause regarding the Registrar and Reseller responsibilities as found in the nz rules.
"
8.2.6. A Registrar or Reseller must not register or update a domain to be registered in its own name unless the Registrar or Reseller intends to use the domain name itself. A Registrar must not enter into a lease, licence or any other arrangement with a third party resulting in the Registrar or Reseller registering a domain name in that Registrar or Reseller's own name but held for the benefit of that third party.
"
We are aware that this is not always the case so for that reason Enlighten Domains suggests that resellers review and clean up domains that do not meet this standard both as soon as possible and as they encounter them.
The DNC (Domain Name Commission) are slowly getting more strict about this, and are now random spot-checking domains. The penalties for non-compliance are also increasing and can now impact the end client, resellers (you) and registrars (us).
